Dave studied acting at the University of Maine. After to moving to Portland he became a co-founder of The Cast, which produced one season of productions at the St. Lawrence Arts and Community Center - including Romeo & Juliet, Private Wars, and a medley of Mamet and Durang pieces entitled Hey, We're Acting over Here!. This successful season earned him, and the members of The Cast, a nod in the Portland Phoenix’s 2004 list of Portland’s Most Influential People in the Arts under 35. During this time David became friends with various members of the Mad Horse Theater Company and starting working on their productions as a carpenter, stage manager, actor and lifter of heavy things. Dave has been a MHTC member since 2005.
