Jared Mongeau

Jared Mongeau (He/Him) is an actor, physical comedian, theatre maker, and musician based in Portland, Maine. He began his career in the circus, performing with internationally acclaimed youth circus Circus Smirkus before joining the historic Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey at age 18 as a clown for two national tours. Following a stint teaching children of all ages clowning and parkour at a circus school in the Bay Area and a season creating original comedic characters for Six Flags, he graduated from Dell’Arte International School of Physical Theatre’s MFA program in California. This experience brought him to Bali, Indonesia, to study traditional mask carving and performance, and his graduating thesis, In the Trenches, a clown tragedy, toured internationally, including a mainstage appearance at the Edmonton International Fringe Theatre Festival, the largest theatre festival in North America.

He originated the role of the Mad Hatter in Jane Doe in Wonderland: Theatre Against Sex Trafficking, which was featured on CNN, and his original, multi-award-winning two-hander Aardvark Boat Tours was remounted at Mad Horse Theatre Company, the Children’s Museum & Theatre of Maine, and for the United States Association of Fringe Festivals. On film, he has appeared in independent films and shorts throughout New England, as well as in commercials for brands such as Sam Adams and Honda. As a musician, he toured throughout Canada and 16 European countries with his band, That Dog Was a Band Now, including appearances on Sofar Sounds and a headlining show on London’s West End.

Locally, he has acted with Portland Stage, The Public Theater, Portland Theater Festival, Good Theater, Camden Shakespeare Festival, Ziggurat Theatre Ensemble, The Theater Project, Portland Shakespeare Company, and the Children’s Museum & Theatre of Maine. He has directed multiple pieces for the Maine Playwrights Festival and David Ives’ All In The Timing as the inaugural production of the Tony Shalhoub Black Box Theater at the University of Southern Maine. With Mad Horse Theatre Company, he created the solo virtual-clown performance This is Just Intermission and has appeared in The Squirrels, Tumacho, Dance Nation, and When We Were Young and Unafraid.
